Coastal Development Center

The concept of the Coastal Development Center aims to contribute to the development of new industries and job opportunities in the region for which the center is responsible. It also aims to test initiatives that will both counteract depopulation and increase immigration.

Our hypothesis is that there are many people along the coast who possess valuable knowledge and perspectives about the challenges and opportunities that exist in coastal areas. However, these individuals don't always know who to reach out to or how to proceed in order to translate their knowledge into value.

Therefore, we believe that we can unlock significant potential for value creation by connecting "savvy individuals" along the coast with "savvy individuals" from universities and companies both within Norway and from around the world. This involves a sort of advanced "matchmaking," where a "problem in search of a solution" is paired with "a solution in search of a problem," in a structured manner.

Background

The digital revolution

Norway is moving away from being a robust and decentralized state where the entire country is utilized. With the escalating centralization, we are getting a less resilient structure, where in the extreme outcome, we might no longer know what Norway is or what opportunities the country holds. The digital shift opens up the possibility to reverse this trend.

Research

It's about Norway

In its report “It’s About Norway” from 2020, the so-called Norman Committee concluded that there is a significant need for innovative thinking about the role of districts in Norwegian society and about district policy. An important insight was that merely having job opportunities isn’t sufficient to retain the youth. Something more is required.

“We need to experiment with new measures and solutions in district policy. The goal is to make it more attractive and stimulate immigration in vulnerable and strategically important coastal areas in Norway.”
